College for Kids @ Yavapai College

Summer Fun on the VV Campus

Don’t wait for your kids to be bored a few days after Memorial Day, sign up today for College for Kids!

For more than a decade the Yavapai College Verde Valley Campus has sponsored this exciting program that blends fun with facts through hands-on learning adventures. During the months of June and July the campus will be energized with innovative programs for children age five through 17.

Many subjects feature three levels of classes, grouped by age to maximize each participant’s learning experience.
Many favorite summer classes return including magic theater, ceramics, robotics, painting and field-trip based adventures focusing on local geology and environmental education.

This year’s College for Kids program also offers new boredom busters including collage and three-dimensional art, ukulele, origami, “zumbatomic” (a fast-paced music fitness class for kids), animal tracking and science smorgasbord, taught by a team of Verde Valley Campus science faculty members.

To access course descriptions and schedules please go to the Yavapai College website at http://www.yc.edu, and click on Lifelong Learners and go to College for Kids Verde.

Please check the website daily for new classes. Enroll early! Classes are limited to 15 or fewer students and they fill up quickly!

Classes are offered during two, three-week sessions: Session 1 runs from June 7 – 24 and Session 2 runs from July 6 – 22. Thanks to our community partners, scholarship money is available to assist those who want to attend these fun and educational classes.

Registration can be completed online when paying with a credit card.

The program is directed by Campus Activities Coordinator Martha Mays and Student Affairs Assistant Joni Westcott.

New Yavapai College Prescott Art Exhibit

Informal Balance an exhibition of found objects reassembled into three-dimensional post-modern works by artist Shaila Christofferson.

Informal Balance runs Feb. 23 – March 13, 2010. Entrance to the exhibit is free and open to the public.

Working with a wide variety of sculpture media, Christofferson’s work examines material culture and the contemporary landscape. She comments that her most recent work is not pretty nor is it meant to be. “These works comment on our material culture and everyday lives in both the forms that are represented as well as the means of their production. Nearly all of the forms in this body of work were created from (waste) molds fabricated from cast off, discarded package electronics. These sculptures at once appear to be one of a kind, as they are, while also eliciting associations in our sense-memory, a familiarity of objects that we have already unwrapped, handled, crushed, used and ultimately tossed away.”

Christofferson has won several grants and awards for her work and her sculptures have been exhibited widely. Grants include a George Sugarman Foundation Individual Artist Grant and a State of West Virginia Fellowship Grant for Individual Artists.

Shaila Christofferson is assistant professor of art at Chicago State University. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of South Dakota.

The Yavapai College Art Gallery at the Prescott Campus is located inside the Performance Hall.
